Vestigial remains suggest that the region of Lausanne was inhabited as early as the Neolithic era. At the time Celtic-Roman village named Lausonna was established on the riverbank, near the Vidy area. By the late 6th century to 1536, the city was run by its Prince-Bishops.

The Medieval streets of Lausanne have a rich history etched on their worn surfaces - you can follow them directly to the cathedral. Started in 1170, the first element to be laid was the ambulatory.
